Commitment to Diversity

One of my main goals in journalism is to highlight underrepresented perspectives and foster empathy through storytelling. I have pursued this through articles such as a profile following a day in the life of a cafeteria worker, which aimed to create greater appreciation for the often-unrecognized members of our school community. I also strive to represent multiple viewpoints on complex issues; in an article examining the use of ChatGPT among teachers, I interviewed educators across all departments to present a balanced and wholistic discussion.

Beyond my own writing, I have edited and supported articles that celebrate cultural diversity, including coverage of the Multicultural Club and an exploration of Mahatma Gandhi’s influence in Hawaiʻi.

This commitment extends beyond reporting through my work with the interscholastic student journalism committee. I’m proud of bringing together student journalists from diverse backgrounds by intentionally including public, private, and college students and ensuring that students from Maui have access to statewide events such as J-Day.
